ADAM, the Art, Design, Architecture & Media Information Gateway, describes itself as "a searchable catalogue of Internet resources that have been carefully selected and catalogued by professional librarians for the benefit of the UK Higher Education community". The catalogue is not only vast, but also offers considerable information about each resource, including a rating, description and keywords. Unfortunately, the site is no longer in active development, but existing links are being "checked to retain currency". While ADAM therefore remains an important and impressive resource, it seems a shame that the site should be mothballed after so much investment of time and energy. [GAS, 25 Oct 2006].

Arguing that "art and architecture take time to learn, time to execute and time to appreciate", the site claims that by "combining the sensibility with a commitment to sustainability energy efficiency, we give you the recipe for a great house". It certain has some interesting and attractively illustrated content, under such evocative headings as "a welcoming abode", "bright accents" and "artistic inspiration", and including links to some interesting articles and related sites. However, a year after Sapling's previous review the news section and discussion forum remain empty, so there seems little prospect of these being developed in the near future. [GAS, 28 Aug 2006].

Launched in November 2003 and funded by JISC, Artifact describes itself as "a free online subject gateway providing access to the best arts and creative industries web resources for the UK higher and further education learning, teaching and research community". A search facility is provided, or the site can be browsed by theme: sections cover Architecture; Communications, Media and Culture; Design (including Interior Design); Fashion and Beauty; Music and the Performing Arts; and Visual Arts. Comprehensive and regularly updated information is given about each of the 400+ featured sites, including a description, keywords and subject headings. For a gateway showcasing the arts and creative industries, the 'look' of the Artifact site is disappointingly clunky and old-fashioned; however, beneath the aesthetics, it does benefit from a layout and navigation that is simple and quite intuitive. When it launched, the site described its interface as "a sophisticated online environment built on imagery, speed and simplicity", and it certainly is unusual to see construction-related content presented within an architectural aesthetic. Diseño y Decoración en la Argentina

This interior design e-zine from Argentina is a slick affair crammed full information. Extensive archives include articles on various subjects as diverse as Islamic Art, Feminine Fashion and Minimalism. There are interviews with Argentine designers, decorators and architects - however, many of the links are however not available in English. There are also details of competitions, courses and exhibitions in Argentina, Brazil, and Mexico as well as internationally. The current edition of the DyD magazine is augmented by beautiful photographs. As if that wasn't enough, there are contact addresses for many of the people mentioned and several useful links to other sites. Overall, the site is simply laid out and easy to browse, and though the English translation is flawe, it is well worth a visit in order to see what is going on in contemporary Argentinian interior design. Its core content is a unique, searchable architecture database featuring hundreds of buildings, interior-, landscape- and urban planning projects, covering more than 2,900 Dutch design offices, and supported by more than 11,000 good quality pictures (the site's emphasis seems to be on the work of Dutch architects, anywhere in the world, rather than necessarily on buildings in the Netherlands). The site also has useful features such as project reviews, links to other architecture sites, and job opportunities. The site is rich in material, well illustrated, and highly customisable, with clear instructions - users can browse through different types of product (kitchen, bathroom, lighting, flooring, etc.) using the main menu, and then refine their results by product category, product type, brand, designer, country of origin, style or sector. The interface is fine, though the extensive use of frames, evidently optimised for 1024 x 768, makes the site difficult to use on a small monitor. It's easy for a site based around specification information to be dull and stodgy, but ESI.info's lively and well-illustrated pages ensure that the site is lovely to look at as well as an invaluable resource. Normal Room is such a brilliant idea it's hard to imagine that no-one has ever thought of it before. Essentially, the purpose of the site is to showcase "interior design and home furniture from all around the globe", allowing users to "explore the differences and similarities in architecture and home decoration between people in different countries". However, the site's real strength is the way it taps into the same appetite for content sharing that has made YouTube such a success, with users around the world able to upload photos of their own rooms, or to comment on the 'merits' of other people's. Normal Room's interface is also excellent, with a crisp, understated design that doesn't try to compete with the photos on display. Usefully, images can also be browsed by room - including a section dedicated to toilets - or by country, each employing well-designed clickable maps. Refreshingly, the site doesn't take itself too seriously, urging visitors to "explore the variety of lifestyles and cultural peculiarities!" Yet Normal Room is also a strangely compelling resource, offering a unique and fascinating perspective on how people in different cultures and countries live. A site that is sure to grow and thrive. Specifier Magazine is a well respected and well established Australian print-based architecture publication that has recently gone online. The site aims to help architects find product suppliers, and product suppliers to find architects; to encourage the use of green products; and to be a source of design inspiration, news and industry information. The site contains full text and images from the current and past issues of Specifier Magazine, including upcoming international projects and award-winning Australian architecture, green design projects, exhibition reviews and architect profiles. An extensive news section covers the latest openings and happenings, while the architecture and interiors product directory highlights suppliers of green products, and contains downloadable brochure libraries. There is also a searchable database of Australian design and consulting professionals, with more content being added to the site every week. Tree Hugger is a web magazine, covering anything that has a modern aesthetic yet is environmentally responsible. The site boasts a large readership who check out the latest news, reviews and recommendations for modern yet green products and services, and who use its directory to help facilitate their buying processes. Tree Hugger is well written and despite the name does not preach at you, but seeks to inform. Coverage is vast, with headings covering accessories, 'almosts', alternative energy, architecture, audio/video, aviation, bathroom, bedroom, bikes, biopolymer, books, botanical, cars and celebrities, through to solar, sports and technology. In addition, there is also a link to Hugg (http://www.hugg.com/) a sister site and green news story harvester. Here, "all posts start out in the queue. Each time a story is Hugged, it climbs the ranks. If a story gets enough Huggs, it jumps up to the front page where it can be seen by everyone who visits". There is also Tree Hugger TV (http://www.treehuggertv.com/), again a sister site, which offers a video version of the web magazine, featuring material produced by anyone who shares Tree Hugger's passions and can operate a video camera.
