Jim Lawrence Ironworks was started by Jim and his wife, Sheena, in 1993, on their farm in the beautiful Suffolk village of Stoke-by-Nayland. Before this Jim had spent 10 years trying to make the farm viable by rearing cows and pigs, but the general downturn in farm income made this way of life almost impossible.

Jim's interest in the farm workshop, and the forge in particular, was turned to good effect when local orders for fencing and curtain poles started to come in. Combined with a small brochure and very low key advertising, the business began to evolve.

We now employ 50 local people, working from a converted Dutch barn on the farm. The atmosphere is very informal, with employees bringing in their dogs to walk at lunchtime, or going fishing on the pond, created and stocked a few years ago.

But despite this informality (or because of it!) the business is efficient and continues to grow each year. We specialise in supplying hand made quality designs ranging from elegant and discreet light fittings to sumptuous silk curtains and poles and our product range is continually increasing.

We send out 700 brochures each week and dispatch approximately 1500 orders each month. Our average delivery time is 7 days and our customer service is excellent. As Jim is terrified of complaints he does his best to avoid them by offering a no quibble returns policy. We bend over backwards to help a customer in need and never argue, no matter how unreasonable the complaint (and we do occasionally have some shockers!).

In 2002 Jim Lawrence Ironwork won the prestigious Parcelforce Small Business Award. The sense of achievement for all concerned was wonderful, but the £32,000 prize money certainly made us smile!

Jim and Sheena are now concentrating on the future of the business, with plans to expand the workshops and many new and exciting products in the pipe-line.
