The benefits of memory foam

Memory foam (polyurethane) was originally developed by none other than NASA, who created it in 1966 in order to help relieve the pressure felt by astronauts during lift off.

It soon became widely used in the medical field, particularly where patients could not move for a prolonged period of time, before being developed for general use in mattresses and pillows.

So how does it work? High density memory foam softens in reaction to heat, which allows it to mould around a warm body very quickly. Lower-density foam reacts to pressure and so moulds around a body in the same way as the high-density type, wherever pressure is applied. Both types swiftly return to their former state so there are no lingering imprints.

Memory foam has a huge range of health benefits, not to mention being generally more comfortable than regular alternatives. It is considered an ideal compromise between soft and firm mattresses, and is much more supportive than normal options. The foam helps alleviate pressure points, preventing sores and lessening aches and pains. The adaptable nature of memory foam makes it perfect for sufferers of back and neck problems, as it supports your body in its natural position rather than forcing you into an abnormal shape.

If you don't suffer from specific aches and pains but still struggle to get comfortable at night, a memory foam mattress or mattress topper will go a long way to helping you feel more relaxed. As you sink into the foam, you'll feel almost like you're floating - no springs digging into your back or squeaking when you roll over. Memory foam pillows will do the same for your head and neck, letting you rest properly in a truly comfortable position.

Although memory foam mattresses and pillows are generally more highly priced than others, the benefits are well worth the extra cost. Memory foam is also very durable, so you are paying for longevity as well as quality and comfort.

A TEMPUR mattress can make you feel so relaxed that, in fact, you'll feel weightless. Sleep is essential for both your health and your wellbeing, and around the world TEMPUR owners are enjoying their best night's sleep every night thanks to the unique properties of TEMPUR material. With a wide range of products designed to suit every preference and need, you're sure to find the solution that's right for you.
