Ideas for home storage solutions on a budget
We are all guilty of hoarding possessions, whether it is prized collections, years of personal items, or just random stuff we don't want to get rid of.
Minimalism is a fine idea, but as adults we collect items attached to our memories, as well as things we need for our day-to-day lives and hobbies.
Having the right storage is essential for keeping all this stuff tucked away. Most importantly, according to leading UK house-buying firm Ready Steady Sell, hiding away clutter is a must if you want to sell your house fast.
However, finding the right solutions to store our items can sometimes be expensive, whether we're looking to buy off-the-shelf storage furniture or have something built in by a professional.
Nevertheless, just browse the Internet and you'll find a vast bank of tried-and-tested - and budget - solutions to storage dilemmas.
Here are some of our favourite tips.
Use the space above your head
We all crave extra space in our homes, meaning that making the most of the volume you have is essential. One place to look at is the garage - and the space between your head and the ceiling.
Attaching carriages made from 2x4s and plywood strips, and sliding reinforced plastic totes along to hang, can provide a great space for Christmas decorations, camping gear, seasonal clothing and extra bedding. It's also an excellent way to free up ground space in your garage.
Create handy storage space from alcoves
In the house itself, sliding doors on tracks can be great for creating floor-to-ceiling storage solutions that fit in nicely with any décor. Using a space that's already partly enclosed, such as an alcove, can be especially effective.
A solution like this doesn't have to be expensive either; you can buy the rails and attach them yourself, and all that's left to do is purchase and fit the sliding doors. Presto! You have a great storage area that is hidden away when not in use.
This type of storage is also great when it comes to selling your house, as it is somewhere to stow away all your personal items leaving a decluttered look for your potential buyers.
Use storage boxes to make a visual splash
Storage boxes are relatively inexpensive, and perfect for organising all kinds of stuff. A few of them on a bookshelf containing smaller items looks great, and gives a nice, neat, organised appearance.
The vast range of storage boxes available means that there are sizes, styles and colours to fit in with any room - proving that you don't always have to keep your storage out of sight!
