Fill your home with light this spring

While winter's interior décor may have been all about warming fabrics, rich colours and creating cosy spaces, spring is on its way to sweep away the gloom and fill our homes with light. Well, here's hoping, anyway.

So what can you do to give the warmer months ahead a helping hand? We guide you through some top tips for a bright and fresh-feeling home.

Choose the right window dressings

To make the most of the new season's balmy days, make sure your window is letting as much daylight in as possible. While you could opt for lightly-coloured, semi-transparent voile curtains, most of us would like the option of being able to up the level of privacy a room enjoys. This is where blinds come in to their own: opt for a venetian blind in your favourite light shade and you'll be able to vary the level of light and privacy in a room.

Choose your colours wisely

Using lighter colours is a no-brainer when you want to create an airy feel in a room, but what about personality? You'll get a much more interesting look without sacrificing the cheerful atmosphere by going for a trend such as bright botanicals or pretty pastels. To get the best out of either of these looks, opt for pale furniture to continue the fresh, clean feel.

If you don't like the look of all-white furnishings and prefer a more traditional look, you can still create a spring-worthy airiness by opting for pale sofa coverings and cushions. Be inspired by the combination of light and dark in this example.

Don't be afraid to go artificial

If you're not happy with the amount of daylight a room receives, consider getting a simulated daylight lamp. They're great if the long dark days of winter have left you feeling a little low, as the light can really lift your mood.

Make the most of what you have

Use carefully positioned mirrors to bounce the light from both windows and wall lighting around the room. For a really dramatic look, mount a large mirror on the wall facing your window, framed in a colour that blends easily with the wall around it to blur the lines between reflection and reality and give your view of the outside world double the impact. Have fun with mirrors and use them to develop a theme if you have one: your room will benefit from the light and you could end up with a real talking point, like the impressive layout here.
